چکیده

Deep seas cover more than half the planet and depend due to their lack of light on inflow of nutrients from above. Viruses play a critical role for the trophic supply of the deep-sea environments.

New perspectives in benthic deep-sea microbial ecology

Deep-sea ecosystems represent the largest and most remote biome of the biosphere. They play a fundamental role in global biogeochemical cycles and their functions allow existence of life on our planet. In the last 20 years enormous progress has been made in the investigation of deep-sea microbes, but the knowledge of the microbial ecology of the soft bottoms (representing >90% of the deep-sea f...

Metagenetic community analysis of microbial eukaryotes illuminates biogeographic patterns in deep-sea and shallow water sediments.

Microbial eukaryotes (nematodes, protists, fungi, etc., loosely referred to as meiofauna) are ubiquitous in marine sediments and probably play pivotal roles in maintaining ecosystem function. Although the deep-sea benthos represents one of the world's largest habitats, we lack a firm understanding of the biodiversity and community interactions amongst meiobenthic organisms in this ecosystem. Wi...

Microbial Ecology of Mid-Ocean Ridges and Back-Arc Basins

Over the past two decades, microbiologists have gained significant insights into the diversity and physiology of microbial communities associated with deep-sea hydrothermal systems. Much of the initial research focused on mid-ocean ridge (MOR) systems; however, because of the greater heterogeneity of vent fluid chemistry and sulfide structures from back-arc basin (BAB) systems, recent studies h...

Invertebrate population genetics across Earth's largest habitat: The deep-sea floor.

Despite the deep sea being the largest habitat on Earth, there are just 77 population genetic studies of invertebrates (115 species) inhabiting non-chemosynthetic ecosystems on the deep-sea floor (below 200 m depth). We review and synthesize the results of these papers. Studies reveal levels of genetic diversity comparable to shallow-water species. Generally, populations at similar depths were ...

Research Article: Trophic dynamics analysis and ecosystem structure for some fish species of northern Oman Sea

In the present study, a trophic structure model for some fish species of the northern Oman Sea is developed through using mass balance modeling software, Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE). In this model, we simulated 16 functional groups spread across an area of 3998.20 km2 from 2017 to 2018. Mean trophic level in the area of the present study was 3.49. Values calculated for system omnivory and connect...
